A practical timeline to help you prepare for every stage of your move, from four weeks out to settling into your new home.
Moving house involves many tasks spread across several weeks. This checklist breaks them down by timeline so nothing important is missed. Use it alongside your removal quote to make sure you have everything ready before moving day.
1Four or More Weeks Before Moving
- Confirm your moving date and request a removal quote
- Start decluttering — sort, donate, sell or dispose of unwanted items
- Begin collecting moving boxes and packing supplies
- Notify your landlord (if renting) or confirm settlement dates
- Start researching schools, GPs and services in your new area
- Arrange transfer of home and contents insurance
2Two Weeks Before Moving
- Arrange disconnection and reconnection of utilities (electricity, gas, water, internet)
- Notify service providers of your address change (banks, Medicare, ATO, electoral roll)
- Update your address on licences and vehicle registration
- Arrange mail redirection through Australia Post
- Confirm booking details with your removalist
- Start packing non-essential items and label boxes with destination rooms
- Arrange care for children and pets on moving day
3The Week of the Move
- Pack remaining items except daily essentials
- Confirm access details at both pickup and delivery addresses
- Check parking availability or arrange permits if needed
- Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer
- Disassemble furniture that needs it and keep hardware in labelled bags
- Prepare an essentials box with toiletries, a change of clothes, charger and snacks
- Confirm the moving date and arrival time
4The Day Before
- Pack your essentials box and keep it separate from the main load
- Keep important documents, jewellery and medications with you
- Do a final check of all rooms, cupboards and outdoor areas
- Take photos of the property condition (if renting)
- Charge your phone and keep the removalist's contact details handy
- Ensure clear walkways for loading
5Moving Day
- Be present or arrange someone to direct the removalists
- Keep valuables and essentials with you, not in the truck
- Do a final walkthrough of every room before leaving
- Check the property is clean and empty
- Hand over keys if required
- Meet the removalists at the delivery address
- Direct boxes to the correct rooms as they are unloaded
6After Arrival
- Check furniture and boxes against your inventory
- Inspect items for any damage and note it immediately
- Set up essential rooms first — bedroom, bathroom and kitchen
- Unpack room by room, starting with the most used areas
- Update your address with any remaining providers
- Dispose of packing materials responsibly
- Take time to settle in and explore your new area
