Preparing for Moving Day
A well-prepared moving day runs more smoothly. These practical steps help ensure everything is ready before the truck arrives.
How well you prepare for moving day can make a real difference to how the day goes. Clear access, properly labelled boxes, prepared appliances and good communication all help the removalists work efficiently and reduce the chance of delays or damage.
Clear Walkways
Ensure paths from rooms to the truck are clear of obstacles, tripping hazards and clutter. This speeds up loading and reduces the risk of damage to walls and doorframes.
Label Boxes Clearly
Label each box with the destination room and a brief contents description. This helps removalists place boxes in the right rooms at the delivery address.
Separate Valuables & Essentials
Keep jewellery, important documents, medications, chargers and a change of clothes with you rather than loading them on the truck.
Prepare Appliances
Defrost the fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before, drain the washing machine, and disconnect and clean appliances ready for transport.
Confirm Access
Check that the truck can access both properties. Note any narrow streets, low branches, weight limits or gated access that may cause issues.
Reserve Parking
If parking is limited, consider reserving a space near the entrance or checking if a council permit is needed for the truck.
Identify Fragile & Heavy Items
Point out fragile, heavy or valuable items to the removalists on arrival so they can plan loading and handling accordingly.
Keep Children & Pets Safe
Arrange for someone to look after children and pets on moving day, or keep them in a safe, separate area away from the loading activity.
Check Both Addresses
Visit or review access at both the pickup and delivery addresses. Check doorways, stairs, lifts and parking at the new property.
Communicate Changes Early
If anything changes — date, access, inventory or timing — let the removalist know as early as possible so adjustments can be made.
